Did Microsoft change your default web browser? [Windows updates April 2007]

Wednesday 11th April 2007

I arrived to work on this sunny day to find a number of Windows updates waiting for me to let them loose;

  • MS07-017 – addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows (KB925902)
  • MS07-019 – addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows (KB931261)
  • MS07-020 – addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows (KB932168)
  • MS07-021 – addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows (KB930178)
  • MS07-022 – addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows (KB931784)

So being someone who likes to stay up to date I clicked the install button, obviously once the updates were installed I permormed the ritual restart. Once I was back on I opened up Firefox (my preferred web browser) and to my surprise it wasn’t the default web browser anymore, Internet bloody Explorer was. So I instantly assumed it had something to do with the updates. A few minutes later and a workmate of mine (sleeping Stu) just finished installing his updates and fired Mozilla Firefox up and the same thing happened, IE was now the default web browser. Is Microsoft sneakily trying to force us all to use IE? Has anyone else had the same thing happen to them? And does anyone have any explanation to this IE takeover?

After reading a number of articles and registering at the Technet webcast I am still none the wiser;

Anybody?
